Chapter Twelve

“Do you know what’s going on?” Cole asked as he strode into the office. “I just stopped by the site of the carpet store. The supplies that were supposed to be delivered yesterday haven’t arrived yet.”

Stacey stared at him in bewilderment. “What? Why are all these unexpected grievances occurring now? I’ll call the lumber company.” She picked up the receiver and punched in the numbers. After explaining to the person on the other end of the line what had happened, she placed her hand over the mouthpiece. “They’re checking into the matter,” she said to Cole.

After several minutes of silence elapsed, his patience unraveling, Cole paced back and forth in front of her desk. There had to be some explanation. The material couldn’t have disappeared into thin air.

“What?” Stacey exclaimed, speaking into the phone again. “How could our order have been given to another contractor? You have to bring more supplies out to the site right away.”

Cole watched as she listened for a minute or so, her face flushing in irritation.

“I understand it will take time so find out where the material was delivered to and try to recover it,” she said into the receiver. “Why can't you just bring us another order?”

She listened for a moment longer, then burst out, “How could you people goof up like this?” Slamming down the receiver, she turned to Cole. “They don't know what happened. They're all out of the kind of material we ordered and won't get another shipment for at least ten days.”

“Great,” Cole growled. “Has this happened before?”

Stacey shook her head. “Never. We’ve done business with this supplier for years and have always gotten excellent service.”

“Looks as if we’ll have to find another wholesale supplier,” Cole said. “That won’t be easy. Not many of them handle that particular material.”

Stacey gestured helplessly. “Then what do we do? We can’t afford to pay the crew to sit around and do nothing, and we can’t lay them off for ten days. They’ve been with us for years, but they have families to support and will have to find work elsewhere.”

His brow knitting in a frown, Cole remained thoughtful for several minutes. If the project wasn’t completed on time, Granger Construction would have to eat the cost overrun. Sam had given him a job when he was in desperate need of one. He couldn’t let him down now.

“If I call some of the yards in the area we might be able to get a portion of what we need to keep going,” Cole said to Stacey. “Did the supplier say who received the material?”

“They just stated that they would have to check into it.”

Cole shook his head in disbelief. “This is crazy. I don’t understand how something like this could happen.”

“Okay, kiddo. What’s wrong?” her father asked.

Stacey had noticed him studying her as she sat across the dinner table from him, his eyes clouded with concern. She placed her fork on the table and forced a smile. “What makes you think something’s wrong?”

“I know you,” he stated.
